For some time now I was using the excellent tool Avafind to seach for files on my computer today I discovered a freeware solution for the needs. Its called Everything and can be obtained here. One draw back is that it searches NTFS volumes only. But its not a major annoyance. The other cool feature that I liked was the ability to search for files and folders in a specific location.
Check it out !!!
Can you please comment on the google utility for the same application – Google Desktop Search?
Google desktop search will allow one to search WITHIN files so that is a great plus in my view but I am kind of afraid of google to be frank with you
. The day I overcome my fear will be the day I try out Google Desktop. Also I think to use Google Desktop for the purposes of searching files is like using a pneumatic hammer to drive home a small nail … just my view though.

it works ONLY on NTFS formatted drives. The reason: it relies on the Master File Table of the NTFS volume to build its index of files, rather than constantly scanning and scouring the hard drive. What this means is that Everything will always be up to date with all file changes that occur on your hard drive.
